During the "Deadball" era a light weight bat wasn't needed because unless you were really strong you weren't going to hit the ball out of the park. It was an era of station to station hitting and the thick handled bats were commonly choked up on. The "Mushroom" on the knob end of this bat was meant as a counter balance to the heavy barrel.
